Today's Wordle answer (game #1462) is… TAUPE.
The most notable thing about today's Wordle is that it's the 18th solution that wasn't on the original answers list drawn up by the game's creator Josh Wardle.
Instead, it's been added by the New York Times' Wordle editor Tracy Bennett, joining a motley crew that includes the likes of GUANO, SNAFU, UVULA and BALSA.
TAUPE is nowhere near as difficult as those, to the extent that people are currently solving it in an average of 3.6 guesses.
Those three vowels will have helped here, as they did with yesterday's CURIO, as will the fact that STARE – the third most popular starting word – left only nine possible solutions.
My experience was rather different: I scored a horrible five. In my defense, WordleBot awarded me 91/99 for skill, but 28/99 for luck, so I think that tells the story of my game. It wasn't a vintage performance by any measure, but nor did I make a complete mess of it.
Sometimes it just isn't meant to be, and this was one of those occasions. KNIFE was not a great opening guess, but that wasn't my fault either, given that I play a random word each day. It left me with 278 words to narrow down, and only a green E at the end to go on.
For my second guess, I played it safe – theoretically – by choosing SOLAR. This included five of the six most common remaining letters, with T the only omission – a decision that would come back to haunt me.
But it needn't have been the case; WordleBot said it would have expected SOLAR to leave 13 answers, but instead it left double that number, 26. The 'Bot's suggestion was GRASP – which should have left 10, only a couple above my guess, but that in reality cut the shortlist to six. As I said, sometimes it just isn't meant to be.
That said, my third guess was not the best. I now had a yellow A, so decided to play ADAGE next in order to try to place it; by including it in two spots I'd surely turn it green.
That made some sense, but really I should have come up with a word that didn't include the E that I already knew was present, in order to gather more information. If I'd have gone with GAMUT, as WordleBot later suggested, I'd have had just two words left now – but instead I had eight.
Still, though I technically hadn't succeeded in turning the A green, there was now only one place where it could go – so I had -A--E and not too many letters left to add to them.
I didn't come up with all of the remaining words – not even close. But I did think of BATHE, CACHE, MATTE and MAUVE, missing HAUTE, MAYBE, PAYEE and – inevitably – TAUPE.
BUTCH was guaranteed to narrow down my four words and give me the solution in five, and fortunately I finally enjoyed some luck in that it also narrowed down the four words I hadn't thought of.
After spending a few minutes starring in bewilderment at the board, I realized that TAUPE was the only answer left and scored a frustrating five.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1461) was… CURIO.
Determining how difficult a Wordle word is can be tricky. WordleBot's average rating is the best measure we have for it – but that can be misleading.
This game is a classic example of that, because AUDIO left only one possible solution and therefore a guaranteed two for anyone who began with it. Well, I say a guaranteed two – it is possible some people still didn't spot it and instead guessed a word that couldn't be the answer. But let's assume most did score a two.
That will undoubtedly have skewed the overall average, which currently stands at 3.7. If AUDIO wasn't as possible as it is, maybe the average here would be around 4.0?
That said, I scored a three myself, despite not having started off too well, so maybe it is just an easy one. After all, it contains three vowels – and they usually make a Wordle easier.
I had only one vowel in my randomly chosen start word, PUSHY, but that was at least in the correct place.
That left me with 116 words, but amazingly I cut them down to just a single option with TRAIL.
There was no great strategy behind it, beyond the fact that U is often followed by A or I (GUARD, BUILD) and that T, R and L are all common letters.
It may not have been a genius guess, but it was incredibly lucky – leaving CURIO as the only answer.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics. Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh? It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free. Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak. The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. 1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green. 2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray. 4. Answers are never plural. 5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green. 6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance. 7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode. 8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle. 9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone. 10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However… 11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess. 12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions.
