Plane acquires Sort to enter US market
Sort’s expertise in AI-native systems and enterprise project workflows will support Plane’s efforts to position itself as a self-managed alternative to traditional project management software.
Open-source project management platform Plane has acquired Sort, a US-based engineering team specialising in enterprise software and AI-driven systems.
Through this acquisition, Plane is expanding its presence in the US market and strengthening its regional operations, said the company in a statement.
“Bringing the Sort team into Plane and expanding into the US are meaningful steps as we scale both our technology and our community. Our focus remains on building a platform that’s not just open-core in principle, but also in practice—designed to give teams full ownership of their workflows, data, and future,” said Vamsi Kurama, CEO, Plane.

The acquisition comes just 18 months after Plane raised $4 million in seed funding. The company expects its US expansion to fuel growth in enterprise pilots, on-premises deployments, and long-term customer relationships.
The startup has also added new leadership with experience from companies such as MongoDB, PayPal, Elastic, BitGo, and Storybook, to strengthen its capabilities across engineering, security, and go-to-market functions.
While Plane is incorporated in the US, the company's team, product, and operations have been primarily based in India. The acquisiton marks its first physical presence in the US, reflecting long-term investment in the region to build for a global market, the company said.
Though incorporated in the US, Plane stated that it has so far built its team, product, and operations out of India, with the acquisition marking its first on-ground presence in the US market.
Plane offers a unified work platform that integrates task management, wikis, and project timelines. The platform currently serves over 100,000 users across its cloud product and open-source community.
