Today's Wordle answer (game #1465) is… ODDLY.

Every now and then, my random word generator will serve up a first guess containing a repeated letter. This is something I could have guarded against (I created the generator myself), but I left repeats in because sometimes they can be very helpful. After all, about a third of Wordles contain a repeat.

The downside is that the chance of my repeated letter being the same as the one that's in the answer is fairly low (and beyond my mathematical abilities to calculate). Hence today's BLESS, with its two Ss, was less than helpful in trying to solve a puzzle that ended up having two Ds.

It did give me an L, at least, but still left 200-plus solutions and a tough task ahead of me.

Playing TRAIL next was a bit of a no-brainer, as T, R, A and I were four of the five most common letters not yet played; the other was O, which didn't pair as well with those characters as 'I' did. It also placed the L at the end, where it regularly turns up.

Unfortunately, luck was not with me today. As I would soon find out, the O I'd omitted would have been much more useful than the 'I', and the L turned out to be in the fourth position, rather than at the end.

That led to a very frustrating second guess: a skill score of 94, according to WordleBot, but a luck score of only 8, no extra letters, and still 36 possible solutions.

With no real idea of what kind of word format I was looking for, I again played the percentages on my third guess, going with COULD; this used the final two vowels, the 10th most common letter (C) and the 13th (D). The only more common letters I hadn't played yet were N and Y.

This isn't my usual approach, in that I'd generally be working out what kind of words might be the answer, and would tailor my guess to that format. But here, I was still very much in the dark, so stuck to the common-letter approach. It's a bit of a brute-force method, but it usually works.

And, eventually, it did so today: the L turned green and the O and D both went yellow. After a little time spent looking at the board I established that ODDLY seemed to be the only remaining answer (it was) and scored my four.

The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was M.

M is a middling ending letter: it ranks 13th in this regard, and only completes 42 Wordle answers overall.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1464) was… THRUM.

Unless you're a Wordle nerd (a Nerdle?) like me, you will probably not realize how uncommon words that start with three consonants are in the game.

Among the 2,309 original solutions, only 50 have no vowel in the first, second or third position, which is few enough in its own right. However, more than half of those 50 use a Y instead of a standard vowel, so I'm going to discount those. After all, with a word such as STYLE (the answer to game #772), that Y is making an 'I' sound, not a more-consonant-like 'ye' as in YOUNG (#899).

Anyway, there's no Y in today's answer, so I'm not sure why I'm waffling on about it. The important point is that if you ignore those Y words, there are a mere 22 Wordle solutions that start with three consonants.

Most of these are S-words, for instance SCRAP (#336), SHRUG (#426) and STRAY (#1279). And then there are a handful of T-words, five to be exact, of which THRUM is one.

THROW (#888), THREE (#924) and THREW (#935) have all been answers already, meaning there's only one more solution to come that begins T-consonant-consonant. And no, I'm not going to tell you what it is (not least because I can't remember and don't want to look it up, because that would be cheating).

All of which is a very long-winded way of saying that THRUM is a reasonably unusual Wordle answer. It doesn't appear to be a particularly difficult one, though, because it currently has an average score of 3.8 – about standard for the game.

I had to settle for a four, due in no small part to my opening guess, IDEAL, being, well, anything but that.

IDEAL gave me zero letters and left 345 possible solutions, so the fact that my second guess, SNORT, cut that number to four was little short of a miracle.

A three was now a possibility, but only if I had a bit more luck. Oh, and I also needed some skill, but lacked that here in that I only found two of the four options – TRUCK and TRUMP. The others were THRUM, obviously, and also TRUTH – which I really, really should have thought of.

I decided to go with TRUCK and though it wasn't correct, did at least get some luck – in that it ruled out two of the other answers, leaving THRUM as the only contender. Not a great game for me all round, but not a disaster either.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
