OpenAI to launch iPod-sized AI device: Reports

OpenAI is reportedly working on its first piece of consumer hardware — a compact, screen less device roughly the size of an iPod Shuffle. The AI-focused company aims to begin mass production of the device by 2027.

The project is being developed in collaboration with Jony Ive, the former Chief Design Officer at Apple, and is receiving backing from Japanese tech conglomerate SoftBank. While OpenAI has yet to confirm the product or release details, reports suggest the device will function as a voice-activated wearable, integrating OpenAI’s AI assistant technology for hands-free interaction.

An AI-first design approach

The device, still under wraps, is expected to depart from traditional smartphone design. Instead of relying on a screen-based interface, it is said to focus on ambient voice interaction — allowing users to speak naturally to an AI assistant in real time. Such a model aligns with broader trends in ambient computing, where digital tools operate in the background with minimal user input.

The goal is to create a new category of device rather than compete directly with smartphones or smartwatches. The emphasis is reportedly on simplicity and convenience, with AI performing tasks such as messaging, answering questions, managing schedules, and providing updates — all through voice.

Strategic partnerships behind the effort

The involvement of Jony Ive signals a focus on design and usability. Ive played a key role in the development of Apple’s most recognisable hardware, including the iPhone and iPad, and his design firm LoveFrom is reportedly overseeing the hardware aesthetics.

SoftBank’s participation adds further scale and capital to the initiative. The company, which has a history of investing in artificial intelligence, robotics, and telecommunications, may also contribute to distribution and manufacturing partnerships in the future.

OpenAI’s hardware ambitions take shape

This marks a notable shift for OpenAI, which has primarily focused on developing AI software, such as the GPT series and its popular ChatGPT platform. The move into hardware could reflect a growing industry trend where AI is being embedded into physical devices for more natural and immediate user experiences.

However, entering the hardware space brings new challenges, including user privacy, device reliability,

power efficiency, and market competition. OpenAI would be entering a sector dominated by companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta — all of which have active AI hardware projects.
