Today's Wordle answer (game #1447) is… DATUM.
DATUM must be one of the least widely used words we've had in recent weeks. IDIOM and SHUCK are both up there, sure, but unless you're a scientist would you ever use DATUM in your daily life?
That probably explains why the average today is 3.9, so higher than for yesterday's CEASE despite having no repeated letters as that word does.
In fact, I'd wager that it would be far above that if not for the performance of the two most popular start words, ADIEU and AUDIO, which left 8 and 5 possible solutions respectively.
As regular readers will know, I'm not a fan of these as start words because they are objectively not as good as many, many others. It seems like such a waste to start with one of them when you could play SLATE or CRANE or something.
Then again, every dog has its day and sometimes they perform very well. Today was a case in point.
I was not so lucky, with BINGO leaving 904 choices; irony doing its thing nicely there, eh?
For my second guess I went with an ER ending to guard against that possible trap, in the form of TASER. This was a little better, giving me a yellow T and green A.
I now had 19 options and immediately realized that lurking among them was an arguably even worse trap than the ER one: CATCH, LATCH, PATCH, HATCH, MATCH and WATCH. I also had MALTY, FAULT and VAULT.
I needed a word to rule out as many of those as I could, and CLUMP was the best I could do. This would guarantee that at worst I'd have a 50/50 between two of those -ATCH words, and it was exactly the same choice that WordleBot made.
As it turned out, the answer wasn't an -ATCH word – and better still CLUMP left only one option. It took me a while to realize that it was DATUM, and I was relieved to see all five letters turn green when they did.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1446)
In a different time zone where it's still Wednesday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1446, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it's the second most common of all, behind only S.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1446) was… CEASE.
Here's yet another easy Wordle, the latest in a run that almost stretches back a week to last Thursday's QUASH. I say 'almost', because Tuesday's ADMIN ended up with an average of 4.0, making it slightly harder than the norm for the game. But I still wouldn't call it downright difficult.
CEASE is definitely not that, despite the presence of a repeated E and the fact that it does have some near-neighbors in the form of LEASE and TEASE.
It currently has an average of 3.6, and is formed from five very common letters; or four, technically, given that there are two Es. Many popular start words will have made great progress, because so many contain that A-E format at the end, and lots also have a C or an S.
Proof: CRANE left five options, SLATE six and STARE seven. That's about 10% of Wordlers covered off right away. With RAISE on nine and ARISE on 13, too, there were big wins to be had today.
Not for me, unfortunately. MOVER covered off the ER ending that so often trips people up, but needlessly as it happened. Instead, it gave me only a yellow E and left 394 possible solutions.
I improved considerably on that with PLANE, which cut the list to 17, but really should have played SLATE instead. If I had done, I would have faced a choice of only five words. Why did I not do that? Purely because I figured SLATE was too obvious, and that's a stupid reason.
In fact, you could describe it as THICK, which was my third choice. This was a lucky guess and left only one word, so I escaped with a four. All told: not exactly a memorable game for me. Let's hope tomorrow is more interesting.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics. Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh? It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free. Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak. The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. 1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green. 2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow. 3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray. 4. Answers are never plural. 5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green. 6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance. 7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode. 8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle. 9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone. 10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However… 11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess. 12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions.
