My Dad Called Bitcoin a Scam in 2017. Yesterday, He Asked Me How to Buy Some.

Hey everyone, I’ve been lurking here for years but never posted. Today felt like the right time to share this. Back in 2017, I was in college and completely obsessed with Bitcoin. I wasn’t a whale or anything—I just believed in the tech and bought a bit whenever I could. I remember trying to explain it to my dad at dinner one night. His response? “It’s fake money. It’ll crash and disappear. Don’t waste your time.” That stuck with me for years. Every time the price dipped, he’d text me something like “Told you.” It became a bit of a joke between us. Fast forward to yesterday. My dad, out of the blue, calls me and says: “Hey… how do I buy Bitcoin?” I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. He’d been watching the news, saw some company he follows move part of their reserves into BTC, and heard coworkers talking about it. He said something I didn’t expect: “I think I was wrong. This isn’t going away.” I didn’t gloat. I just helped him set up a wallet and walked him through a small first buy. He was nervous, but excited. I’m not posting this to say “I told you so.” I’m sharing this because sometimes it takes years for people to come around. And when they do, it’s a reminder that Bitcoin is more than a price chart—it’s a slow wave of changing minds. Stay humble. Keep stacking. submitted by /u/criptoretro2 [link] [comments]

Hey everyone,

I’ve been lurking here for years but never posted.

Don’t waste your time.”

That stuck with me for years. Every time the price dipped, he’d text me something like “Told you.” It became a bit of a joke between us.

Fast forward to yesterday. My dad, out of the blue, calls me and says:

“Hey… how do I buy Bitcoin?”

I thought he was joking. He wasn’t.

He’d been watching the news, saw some company he follows move part of their reserves into BTC, and heard coworkers talking about it. He said something I didn’t expect:

“I think I was wrong. This isn’t going away.”

I didn’t gloat.
