After encouraging performances against Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, United appeared destined for an embarrassing defeat against the Premier League’s bottom side at Old Trafford last night. Amorim had warned a home game against the Saints would prove a more accurate indicator of whether his side had made as much progress as had been claimed in the aftermath of a smash and grab raid at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and so it proved. United were fortunate to only be trailing by a single goal heading into the closing stages before their new talisman equalised with eight minutes remaining. The Ivory Coast winger sent the home supporters into raptures in injury time when he latched onto Cristian Eriksen’s clipped pass and poked the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale, before a another opportunistic strike sealed three points. Rather than lavish Amad with praise after the game, Amorim instead urged fans not to get too carried away with the former Atalanta star’s form and warned the player to take the adulation that will come his way in his stride. ‘The important thing is to win and he helped us and then he is doing a very good season,’ Amorim said of Diallo. ‘But you have to be careful with the young kids. Congratulations to him, enjoy tonight and he needs to appreciate these moments. He did a great job, a good moment for a young kid to score a hat-trick for a club like this.’ Amorim did accept some of the blame for another poor display from his team who remain languishing in 12th in the standings, conceding recent battling performances at Liverpool and Arsenal took their toll. ‘I have big expectations for all, trying to be really demanding and I also understand when they try it and cannot do it,’ he added. ‘The pressure of playing at home is harder than playing away. The demands of controlling all the game against this opponent is harder. We are tired, not just the body but the mind. It is a different game, we have to press more. If we don’t manage the ball for so long, we suffer.’ Though there were celebrations at the end, this was another concerning performance from United, who have done well against stronger opposition when less is expected of them, but struggled to impose themselves on lesser opposition. Part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was among those watching inside Old Trafford, and will not have enjoyed what he saw for much of the night. ‘I had five minutes with him to talk about different things about the game,’ Amorim said. Today was more important to win. I know the fans want to see much better football than this. I want to see better football than this but we need time. To win time we need to win games and we did that today.’ Juric rued the fact his Southampton team did not know how to ‘be more evil’ when trying to see out the game late on. ‘I think we did a really good 70, 75 minutes and then we had really bad management of the game,’ the Croatian said. ‘You cannot play 95 minutes at the same level. There is a moment where you have to manage things differently. We lost some balls in the middle and I didn’t like that. It is a real pity, a real shame to play like this and lose the game.’
