‘It’s easy’ – Former cruiserweight champions doesn’t hesitate when asked if Oleksandr Usyk would beat prime Evander Holyfield

Johnny Nelson felt it was a simple pick when asked if Oleksandr Usyk would beat Evander Holyfield if the pair were in their primes. Usyk has recently pushed his name into arguments as an all-time great, having beaten Tyson Fury in their rematch to cement his status as an undefeated king of the heavyweight division. Usyk has done it all at cruiserweight and heavyweightGetty The Ukrainian had already etched his name in the history books having reigned as an undisputed cruiserweight world champion prior, with his dominance registered in two weight classes. Holyfield is considered a boxing legend having equally taken a similar route by first becoming boxing’s first undisputed cruiserweight champion. He then moved up to heavyweight becoming undisputed champion from 1990 to 1992, as well as being a four-time champion in the division. The pair have had similar career paths during their careers and have naturally been compared and contrasted in a unique clash of styles. And in an exclusive chat with talkSPORT.com, former WBO cruiserweight champion Nelson, who held the belt for six years, sees Holyfield having the weapons to beat Usyk if they were to meet in a fantasy fight. “I can easily answer that,” he responded when asked who would in a prime vs prime fight between the pair. “You look at a prime Evander Holyfield jumping up to heavyweight with a prime Oleksandr Usyk, I’d go for Holyfield. “Holyfield could be destructive, concussive and would figure everything out until the last second of every round. “He was on your case, he wouldn’t let you off the hook and his punch variation was fantastic. “Even when he boxed Mike Tyson, the direction of the punches that came through, there was no ducking out of the way, you had to be smart. Holyfield had the same level of success with both going down as greats “It would have been an amazing fight but I would have sided with Evander Holyfield, because of his power, stamina and pace. “But that is no slant on Usyk because he’s beaten the best fighters around, but if you look at the fighters Evander has beaten then that is how you measure it.” Holyfield retired from the sport in 2011 leaving a remarkable legacy in the sport, having beaten the likes of Tyson, Larry Holmes and George Foreman. Usyk is threatening to leave a more dominant legacy, having yet to lose as a professional. He is now 37-years-old and has proved to everybody that any doubts were misplaced, given fears over his size when he first made the leap. Despite achieving it all, it appears he still has ambition of further fights including a potential rematch with Daniel Dubois. Nelson believes Holyfield would beat Usyk in their primesGetty The current unified champion has also been linked with a move back down to cruiserweight to become a two-time world title holder. But Nelson doubts it can happen, adding: “No I don’t think it will happen. “Once he has gone up, for him to come back down again in weight it would be very hard. “And two, financially it wouldn’t balance out. There is no way he’d be able to command that kind of money at cruiserweight. “If you’re a fighter that’s done what he has, why would yo put a disadvantage to get down and box for less money? “I just believe it’s great talk, in reality he could do bridgerweight. Jai Opetaia is a big fight at cruiserweight but is it big enough?” Follow talkBOXING on social media talkBOXING is now on Twitter and Facebook. The Ukrainian had already etched his name in the history books having reigned as an undisputed cruiserweight world champion prior, with his dominance registered in two weight classes.

“He was on your case, he wouldn’t let you off the hook and his punch variation was fantastic.
