Shakur Stevenson believes Terence Crawford can make ‘easy work’ of Canelo Alvarez. Crawford and Alvarez reportedly held positive talks with Turki Alalshikh for their potential mega-fight at the Ring Magazine awards in London last weekend. Alvarez is the current unified world champion at 168lbs (super-middleweight) and was first called out by ‘Bud’ after his victory over Edgar Berlanga last year. Crawford, meanwhile, rules the 154lbs (light-middleweight) division as its WBA champion, and has vowed to pile on 14lbs to make the blockbuster fight, which would likely be the highest pay day of his career. When asked if he thinks we will see two of the sport’s biggest pound-for-pound stars meet in the squared circle, WBC lightweight champion Stevenson was confident with his answer. “Honestly, I’ve been saying this for years now,” Stevenson, 27, told talkSPORT Boxing. “I’m probably the first one that has been saying this – even before Terence was saying it. “I always thought that his [Crawford’s] style versus Canelo, I think he beats Canelo. “I’m not saying it’ll be an easy fight, but he can make it a very easy fight.” talkSPORT pundit Gareth A. Davies responded: “I ran into Terence in Dubai, and he’s really thicker. “He’s thickened out recently. He’s 38…He has thickened out.” Stevenson is undefeated in 22 pro boxing bouts Stevenson added: “That’s another thing too. I don’t think Canelo is walking through his punches. “Terence can punch, and that goes for any weight class.” Saudi boxing chief Alalshikh has himself teased suggestions of a fight between Alvarez and ‘Bud’. “The Ring is the Bible of Boxing, and we are close to seeing the white smoke on the horizon,” he told Ring Magazine. “2025 will be a crazy year for boxing and I mean it.” Stevenson is in the middle of a training camp for his highly-anticipated WBC lightweight title fight against Floyd Schofield on February 22. Schofield is only 22, but has 12 KO’s on his 18-0 recordGETTY Schofield’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, confirmed his client accepted the terms offered to him to face Stevenson for the green and gold strap back at the beginning of December. Stevenson was initially set to face mandatory contender William Zepeda early next year. But Zepeda suffered a hand injury in his victory over Tevin Farmer in November, which subsequently ruled him out of the clash. His newly scheduled bout will take place in Saudi Arabia as part of a stacked card Riyadh Season card. Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol‘s rematch for the undisputed light heavyweight titles headline the event billed as ‘The Last Crescendo’. Daniel Dubois also features on the card as he defends his IBF heavyweight title for the first time since knocking out Anthony Joshua against Joseph Parker. “It’s kind of a different experience,” Stevenson added, referring to his next bout. “I’m probably used to being the younger guy, the young hungry lion. “And now you got another young hungry lion that’s younger than me – I definitely don’t think he’s hungrier than me. “But he wants to take my spot. I remember being that age and fighting for my first world title. “In my brain it was like I got to do everything I can to win. I got to train as hard as I could. “I got to make sure that I come out victorious. I know he’s probably in the same shoes right now. “You can’t take him lightly but at the end of the day I wasn’t going against somebody like myself.” Aside from talks surrounding Tyson Fury‘s next fight, and Conor Benn vs Chris Eubank Jr., a showdown between Crawford and Alvarez would be one of the most mouth-watering prospects in the sport currently. A fight between the pair could be an uphill battle for ‘Bud’, who will give away physical advantages, and as a result Alvarez will likely be made the favourite for a victory. Crawford is nearing the end of his career and it would certainly be a sensational final bow if he was to retire after the fight as a five-weight king.
