Alex de Minaur walks off court after his loss Defending champion Sinner took just 108 minutes to end home favourite de Minaur’s best run at Melbourne Park, securing a routine 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory. It was humbling defeat for the Australian, who won just 10 points on the Sinner’s serve, and has now lost ten straight matches against the Italian. Hope was high on Rod Laver Arena for de Minaur – Sinner was coming off the back of an illness which left him shaking in the previous round, and an upset felt possible.  However, Australian hopes were quickly dashed when Sinner began striking the ball sweetly and consistently. It has been 20 years since an Australian reached the men’s singles semi-finals and it will extend to 21 following the exit of their last hope in the men’s draw. “Right now my worst match-up on tour is Jannik. The head to head doesn’t lie,” said De Minaur. “In these types of conditions where it’s a little bit colder and you can’t really get the ball out of his strike zone, he can just unload and not miss. It’s tough.” Inevitably with such a thrashing comes intense social media scrutiny, and fans online were quick to highlight Sinner’s dominance along with the Australian’s poor showing. The 25-year-old could not contain himself after seeing the criticism, replying to a fan on X who called his performance ‘awful’. Alex de Minaur’s social media post responding to fan criticism Jannik Sinner was ruthless in his match against Alex de Minaur “Alex De Minaur has zero self belief that he can even compete with Sinner let alone beat him. Awful performance from him.” a fan posted. “Hey mate it’s a shame that you never became a good enough player to experience playing Jannik,” the Australian No.1 responded. “I’m sure you would’ve put up a better performance and know exactly how to beat him. Wishing you all the best!!!” Many fans rushed to defend de Minaur’s aid, telling him his performance was good and it was simply the result of Sinner’s dominance that he now exits the tournament. “Alex you played well man. Sinner is on another level, we all know that. Congratulations on where you got to in the tournament,” one fan replied to the Australian. Attention will now turn to the hard-court swing across the Middle East and US for the 25-year-old before the clay court season starts in March. For Sinner, he has a mouth-watering semi-final clash against hot American prospect Ben Shelton, who also faced controversy after being told he would be booed in the final four. The men’s singles semi-finals takes place on Friday with Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev headlining the other match.
